Farm Tomita is famous for being the place to visit for those wishing to see lavenders in Hokkaido. As one of Hokkaido’s premier flower farms, it has expanded from being a simple lavender farm to include other varieties of flowers in its large fields, such as French Marigolds, Poppies and many more. The most famous image of Farm Tomita is its 'rainbow field', created by planting different rows of flowers aside each other, along the gentle sloping hills. This image has drawn many visitors each year who come to capture this beautiful sight with their cameras, made famous by its appearance in a nation wide Japan Rail calendar. Other than the fields of flowers, Farm Tomita also has cafes, gift shops, a dried flower shop, and ice cream vendors selling lavender ice cream. Admission is free, and the weather for photography is best in the wee hours of the morning.
Lavender has been cultivated in Hokkaido for more than half a century. When the arrival of lower priced, imported lavender led to a decrease in demand for Hokkaido's lavender in the 1960s and 70s, the local lavender's main function shifted from agricultural product to tourist attraction.
Nowadays, Furano's lavender fields attract large numbers of visitors to the region every summer, when the plants are in full bloom. The majority of lavender usually starts blooming in late June and reaches its peak from around mid July to early August. Less numerous, later flowering varieties of lavender remain in bloom into mid August.
Many other flowers make Furano an attractive destination outside of the lavender season, as well. The main season for flower viewing takes place between June and September, although some flowers also bloom earlier and later than that. Flowers include rape blossoms, poppies and lupins from June, lilies from July and sunflowers, salvias and cosmos from August and September.

Sighseeing
- There is a Biei Tourist Information Center (TEL 0167-23-3388) next to the JR Furano Station. The center open from April to October every year. The center provides brochures, train schedule, group tour information with English, Chinese and Korean, there is also a staff too.
- Along with the fields, the farm has cafes, ice cream venders selling delicious
lavender ice cream, gift shops, a dried flower shop and a potpourri shop. Lavender made desserts such as lavender ice cream, lavender pudding with honey, lavender cream puff and lavender jelly are recommended but only sold between late April and mid October. Lavender ice cream is the most popular product that every people will try when they visit the farm. Made with the natural lavender and the famous dairy product from Hokkaido, the ice-cream contains the nature taste of lavender. Also, it is really smooth and delicious.
Enjoy another popular farm for lavender
- Another popular farm for lavender and other flowers is the Flower Land Kamifurano. The farm's hillside location affords beautiful views of the Tokachi mountain range in combination with the flower fields. Among the attractions are rides through the fields on tractor pulled carts and hands on experiences such as lavender cutting and flower pressing.
- An attractive way to travel between Furano, Biei and some of the lavender farms while enjoying the scenery, is the Furano-Biei Norokko train. The train operates daily from early June through August and stops at the temporarily constructed Lavender-Batake Station, a five minute walk from Farm Tomita.
