Hanami – Cherry Blossom Viewing Cherry blossom viewing or hanami in Japanese in springtime is the annual Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the blooming foliage, the custom is widely believed to have started in the Heian Period (794–1185). During the cherry blossom viewing season, Japanese people gather to visit mountains, parks or temples with cherry blossoms and hold sake-drinking parties beneath the cherry trees in full blossom. In some cities, it's also common to have celebrations under the sakura at night. Hanami at night is called yozakura. There are also cherry blossom festivals throught out Japan. The greatest charm of sightseeing in Japan is surely the seasonal change, such as the cherry blossoms in the spring season. |
